Are you kidding me?

3 miles on the schedule today....done....barely!

Today was my last three mile run.  I have no plans to run now until the marathon on Sunday.  So yesterday, I was taking some stuff down the basement when my left calf was pulled.  Are you kidding me? A muscle pull five days before the marathon?  While I ran today, it was much slower than usual.  The first mile I did in 8:30(not bad) but then it went 9:34, 9:01.  Not good enough to meet a 4 hour time goal.  The calf is sore and is still sore after the run.  On a positive note, at least I didn't miss any runs as the next four days was planned as a rest day anyway.  Also, the run I did do today helped loosen up the muscle so I know that  at least I can finish the race.  Did it bother me?  Yes.  Was it painful - No.  I'm hoping that it will not be sore by then so I can meet my goal.

So going into this week, I'm changing the goal from 4 hours to finish.  This just sucks but I don't want to go into this thinking I can do 4 hours and then be disappointed.  I really don't think it's worth getting hurt further just to meet a time goal either.  There is always next year and another 4-6 months of training :(

  1. I'm always nervous the last couple weeks and days before a big race that I'll get injured doing some normal, every day activity. Sounds like your muscle pull isn't too serious though, and with the rest days you should be good to go by Sunday!

  2. What did you do to irritate the Running Gods? Animal sacrifices must be made post haste!

    That sucks. Roll it, ice it, and give it a good hot soak. Go for an easy jog Friday to loosen things up and see how it feels. All is not lost.

  3. Good luck! I hope you heal fast! I've been battling ITB pain and I have a marathon on Saturday too! I'm taking it really easy this week in the hopes that it goes away at least long enough for me to finish the race!

  7. That sucks!! Good news is you did it 5 days before and not 1. You still have time to heal. Treat it well these next few days and you'll be good to go. Seriously hope you feel better before race day. Good luck!!

  9. Sorry to hear about that darn calf. I'm doing my marathon on sunday to. My right knee has been acting up. I sure hope it doesnt give to much trouble during the marathon. Good Luck Jeff on Sunday.

  11. It never fails! No matter how careful we are and how meticulously we plan, things always happen. As with the others above, all is not lost. Rest, ice, stretch, etc.... I'm still rooting for your 4 hour finish! Good Luck!

  16. I had the exact same thing happen to me--horrible calf strain 5 days before a 15K turkey trot last year. What worked best for me was icing and keeping it wrapped with an Ace bandage as tightly as I could without cutting off the circulation. But your's doesn't sound as bad as my strain was...I could barely walk for 24 hours and limped through the race. Not a good idea in hindsight.
