Running in a winter wonderland pictures

9 miles on the schedule today.  Ended up doing 10 miles instead.  Crazy since this is the coldest run I have done probably since I started running almost three years ago.  The wind was blowing like crazy!  18 with 0  wind chill.  I had to pull out the Balaclava today for a ninja run.  You know it's cold when I pull that thing out.  I only saw about 10 people for the first 5 miles then coming back there were more.  All runners(actually saw two bikers too) - we are insane.  I even saw one guy at the beginning of my run wearing shorts - SHORTS in this weather!  I thought I was crazy just for being out there.

I decided to bring my camera to take some shots at Stony Creek.  I don't usually bring it but my running buddy was sick today so I was alone and decided, why not get some nice winter pictures to pass the time.  I started out running and when I got to the first spot to take the picture about 2 miles into the run.....it was too cold!  So I kept running and finally once I warmed up at about mile 5, I was able to get some great pictures.

So, enjoy....it's running in a winter wonderland at Stony Creek(except for the first picture)
Another use for duct tape.
Works great to keep your feet warm when the
wind chill gets that low.  First time I used it this year!
About mile 5 just after I climbed that hill by the nature center
Coming back down the hill again.
Still coming down the hill; see the ninja!
How do you like the glasses?  I'll have a review soon!
There's actually nature(Ducks!) near the nature center
even in these temps!
Ready to climb!
This is the trail around the lake.  Still pretty snowy.
It was worse in other spots.
A little creek right off the 6 mile loop trail.
You have to stop and smell the roses once in awhile.
River running by the 6 mile loop.
I thought it looked cool!
I like the floating ice
Almost back; about mile 9; lake is still not frozen
The thing I love about Stony Creek and Michigan is that you get to see the same area in quite a different perspective each season.

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!!

Stuffits Review & Giveaway!!!

3 miles on the schedule today...done!  Unfortunately, winter is back today.  25 degrees on my run but were supposed to get up to 39 today so that's nice.

---------------

Stuffitts - I had not heard of this unique product before but thought they might be something my readers would have an interest in.  Actually a really great story.  These were invented by a guy, Mike Huebner, training for his first triathlon.  He got tired of having wet, stinky shoes and bike cleats so he came up with this idea.  I love how things like these are developed.

It's a very simple product.  Stuffitts are a portable drying solution for your shoes, helmets, gloves or other gear.  I specifically asked for the company to review the shoe's version of the Stuffitts since of course I run.  Here's what I was sent:

As I said, they are a very simple product.  Here's the scenario:  You come back from your daily run.  It was raining pretty hard or the snow was really sloshy so your shoes are soaking wet inside and out.  It happens to me all the time.  For you dreadmill lovers, get outside!  So, anyway, you take the Stuffitts and "stuff" your shoes with them and the next day....boom! you're ready to run again.  I've tried out the pair I received on numerous runs and they worked great.

Now I know many of you are probably thinking, why can't I just use newspaper like I always have?  Personally I have found that while newspaper does get your shoes dry, it takes much longer than the Stuffitts.  The ink also gets in your shoes since they are wet.  The newspaper also does not protect against odor either plus if your shoes are really wet, you need to change out the newspaper a couple times to get your shoes try.  This makes things much easier in my opinion.

Even though I switch out my shoes with other pairs daily, I prefer to get the shoes dry right away to help keep the shoes in good working order.  I hate leaving my shoes around for a couple days drying on their own.

As you can see, it also has a strap that comes with them that allows you to hang the shoes if you want.  Here's what they look like in my shoes.

The interior of these are filled with Eastern Red Cedar fill.  The product is a micro-poly wicking fabric infused with Microban antimicrobial product protection.  In other words, it soaks up the wetness in your shoes and it keeps them smelling good.

Here's a couple more close up pictures of the product.

Nice quality stitching and zipper
You can see the cedar inside
The Stuffitts come in five color choices and they also come in four sizes to fit all shoes sizes.  They retail on their website for $24.95.  You can also purchase replacement cedar inserts for $9.95 as well.

The only issue that I really saw with these is the size.  I wear an 8.5 shoe size and they seemed to be a little short in the shoes.  You can see from the picture above that when they are pushed up to the toe, there is an inch or so left open at the heal.  I would have liked to see them be a little longer to help the wetness near the rear of the shoe.  Perhaps if I would have gotten the large size, that might have fixed the issue.  It seems that they run small.

Interested in getting a pair for yourself?  How would you like to win one?

Stuffitts has agreed to give away a pair to one of my lucky readers(sorry, US residents only).  Here's the rules:

1)  Follow Stuffitts on Facebook or Twitter and tell them "Detroit Runner sent me." and let me know you did that here(1 entry)
2)  Follow Detroit Runner on Facebook or Twitter; see top of sidebar and leave a comment on my Facebook wall or mention me on Twitter(1 entry)
3)  Follow Detroit Runner by e-mail; see sidebar to enter your e-mail and let me know you added it.(1 entry)

Three chances to win.  I'll pick a winner on Wednesday, February 15th!  Good luck!

Follow me and a winner!!!!

3 miles on the schedule today....done but it sure is colder out there today.  At least 15-20 degrees!

----------------

Before I get to the winner of the Nuun, I wanted to talk about following this blog.  I know many of you are "folllowers" through Google friend connect.  With it's looming demise on March 1, I would like to move towards getting people to follow me in different ways even if you follow through Google Friend Connect.  There's really three other easy ways to follow me:

1) Follow me by e-mail.  Enter your e-mail in the space on my sidebar and that's it, you're in.  You will receive an e-mail each time I post which is usually daily.  I have a whopping 4 followers this way.

2) Follow me on Facebook.  84 people follow this way currently.  Click the Facebook icon above my sidebar and "like" Detroit Runner and you're good to go.  As long as you have a Facebook account, you will not miss a post.

3) Follow me on Twitter(@detroitrunner1).  I have 150 following this way now.  Click the Twitter icon above my sidebar and "follow" Detroit Runner and you're set!  Again, as long as you have a Twitter account, you will see my posts.

4) You can also follow me through RSS reader which I know many of you use on a daily basis.  It's just difficult to track who is reading posts and who is not.  Of course, I guess even if you follow in other ways, it does not mean you are reading daily anyway.

So while you might read but not follow, I'm asking you to please follow one of these ways since Google Friend connect will be gone shortly.  I know you are reading because I had over 11,000 hits on the blog last month.  This tells me lots of readers but not as many followers.

While I could also add Google+ as an option, I'm not convinced I want to add that to my list of ways to follow.  Have you been using Google+ much?  Do you like it?

---------------

Ok, onto the winner.....

and the winner of the Nuun tablets, chosen by Random.org is.......

Christy @ My Dirt Road Anthem!!!

Yea Christy.  Congratulations.  Please send me an e-mail with your address and I'll get the Nuun out to you!

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!

Trail Running; let's do it!

6 miles on the schedule today.  It was a fairly uneventful run.  I mean, really, how could it not be, it's 5am for God's sake!  Who in their right mind is up at this hour?  Only one fearless runner.....me!  Oh, and also those that have to start work at an ungodly hour as well.  Of course, I can't fault them for having to work.  Ha!
--------------------
Trail Running.  It's not really a topic that I've talked about.  Of course, probably because I'm no expert.  Ok, I'm really no expert on road running either but at least I can say I've done that a few thousand miles.  While I've done a little trail running - Paint Creek, for example.  I'm not sure you can even count this as trail running.  It's flat.  It's wide.  In addition, it's groomed for the most part with crushed limestone.  I love the way it feels running on it but I sure could not consider myself a trail runner based on running on this.

There are some trails that are at Stony Creek at the park I run weekly.  I have not gotten off the beat and path but I plan to do that this summer.  You can only take so much running on the paved trail around the lake there or paved roads for that matter.  I need a break this year from running on the roads and think this is a great alternative.  I could bike more but really I love running!

I ventured off near the nature center in Stony Creek a little over a week ago with my running buddy.  It's not really set up for running since it's gravel but since it was snow covered, it was easier to run on.  It's probably not the best place to run in the summer.  My plans are to take the trails more.  Get muddy.  Get dirty!  Enjoy some of the hills.  I'll have that chance at the Back to the Beach half marathon in May which will take us through some of the trails which will make for an interesting race.

As more time goes into the year, I'm considering signing up for my first half marathon trail run.  I have one picked out.  It's the North Country Run in Northern Michigan.
Source
Note that I'd only be doing the half marathon.  No, I'm not crazy enough to do the 50 mile Ultra just yet nor even the full marathon!  I do need to decide by March 15th before the price goes up though.  I'd have to take off the Crim race since the trail run is the same day and I really, really LOVE the Crim race.  However, it would be the third year for me running the Crim so as they say:  Been there, done that!  Check out the medal for the trail race!  OMG, this thing is huge!  One of the largest in the country.  Ha!
Source
The North Country Run looks like a mostly single track race.  We did some hiking in the Upper Peninsula this past summer on some single track trails and it was incredible.  The feeling of being with nature was nothing like I've felt.  Here's a couple pictures of what I'm talking about:

It felt like I was hundreds of miles away from everyone so I can only imagine what it would be like running a half marathon distance.  Sounds like fun, huh?

So tell me, have you run a trail race and what's a trail race you love running?  Have you run the North Country race in Michigan?

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!

Hyland Post #6 - Month recap and keeping consistent

Rest day on the schedule today.

-------------

Here's a recap of week #5 of 18 weeks of marathon training:

Miles Run:  30.25 miles
Days Run:  5 days
Cross Training:  10 miles on the bike and lifting weights on the Bowflex
Time Training:  5 hours and 30 minutes

---------------

These weeks are flying by.  I can't believe I'm only 13 weeks away from running another marathon!  Wow!  The weather here in Michigan has been unbelievable.  I actually was able to do my long run(12 miles) on the Paint Creek Trail.

Those of you that have run a marathon know that it's nice to do some long runs on nice soft trails.  Not that the trails were really soft since the ground was frozen but it's much better than the concrete I've been running on.  It's really surprising that it's already February and I've only run in the snow a couple times.  This is the year to train for a marathon in the spring in Michigan.
Ok, this was not yesterday but was a nice trail in Michigan.
Here's my recap for the month of January, which happens to be when I started marathon training again:

Miles ran:  105
Miles biked:  30
Weights:  3 times

A good start to the training.  I looked back over the last year and I have not run under 100 miles in a months since.  The most miles I had was 181 miles back in April 2010, a month before I ran my first marathon.  I have kept track of my miles on Dailymile for quite some time now so it makes it easy to look back.  Just a little tidbit.  I have ran 0.10 around the world since I started running.  That's 10%!

The best way I have found to keep consistent with my running?  Run with someone.  Ok, nobody is likely to run with me at 5am before work but I regularly run with my running buddy on the weekend for our long run.  In fact, he just committed to running the same marathon with me in May so it will make it that much easier to complete the training and the race.  Even though we run our own race, it's nice to know that there's someone there going through it with you.  No running buddy?  Consider running with a running club.  We saw one on Saturday's run.  There must have been at least 20 people getting ready to run.  Another way to get through things?  Run with a group like Team in Training.  There's a great group of people out where I run and they are out there every weekend - rain, shine, snow, you name it!  Plus you can join a group that running in some incredible places around the World and it's for a great cause too.

Virtual race reminder....

12 miles on the schedule today.  Had a great run today on the Paint Creek Trail.  Since we have had no snow and little rain, the trail was in really good shape.  A little rough in parts where it was muddy but since the temps were down, it was not muddy today.  I can't remember the last time I ran the paint creek trail in winter.  Usually too snow covered.
---------------------
I sent this to my Dad the other day:

Not sure he appreciated it.  It's his first 5k coming up in March.  I completely agree with this statement though. Who cares if you are last.  Just get out there is my thought.
---------------------
Just a reminder that I'm still organizing a virtual race.  Many of you have signed up for the longer races.  That's great to see.  If you know anyone interested, have them click HERE to sign up.  There will be prizes(chosen at Random).  We have 18 including me right now.  A far cry from last year's with over 60 runners!!!!

RumbleRoller foam roller review

3 miles on the schedule today.....done!

------------

I recently contacted RumbleRoller to ask if I could review their foam roller so they sent me their travel roller.  I am a huge fan of foam rollers but I used to think that they were all the same.

To give you a quick history, I have used a foam roller for over a year now.  I probably do it more than most people so it's very important that I have a roller that will not break down.  I use my roller before a run, after a run and also an additional time before I go to bed.  I do it even more the week after a marathon.

Unfortunately, the regular foam rollers breakdown very quickly after only a couple months of use.
Before I started using a foam roller, I did not see the need for these.  Really --- rolling something on your muscle, what is that going to do?  A lot, that's what!  I experienced IT Band pain back in October 2010 and have been using one ever since.  In my opinion, foam rollers are an invaluable tool and helps keep me running uninjured.  I have not had IT Band pain since(thankfully)

Using a foam roller like the RumbleRoller is called myofascial release and helps to relax the muscles similar to the way you get with a massage.  Basically it's a massage that you can do yourself without the need for an actual massage.

The uniqueness of the RumbleRoller is that it has specially designed bumps that are firm but also stay flexible like the hands of a massage therapist.  Here's what it looks like:

Taken from the RumbleRoller website
See how it fits nicely for travel?
You roll the bumps on your body/muscle putting the pressure that you want on that muscle.  This helps to restore your flexibility such as when you are tight after a run.  As you use this, you can slow down on the part of the muscle that is sore and allow the pressure to help your muscle.  While I have not had to go to a physical therapist, many of them use this type of tool to help you stay injury free or to get you back to running again when injured.

I have used several types of foam rollers.  The first being just a regular foam roll that I discussed above.  I would not recommend this kind if you plan to use them on a regular basis since they break down too quickly.  I have also used another brand that does not break down over time which is good for the muscle.    The RumbleRoller was a HUGE surprise for me in my testing.  Given that I have used a foam roller in the past, I thought there might be a small difference between what I use today and the RumbleRoller.  WOW, was I wrong!!!!  The deepness that this gives you is like nothing else I have used.

Another unique feature is that you can use a back and forth motion but also a side to side motion given the unique shape of the bumps.  The side to side motion gives you even a deeper massage pressure to help with that hard to relieve muscle.  While I will not get into detail of all the exercises you can do with the RumbleRoller, here's a picture of what they provide with it to help you learn how to use it.  I actually do almost everything in this little booklet.

Lot's of exercises to do with the RumbleRoller!
This is the exercise that helped me with my IT Band
I actually put my full weight on it instead of putting down one leg
Hurts so good!!!
The RumbleRollers bumps are about 2 inches apart.  It's takes some time to get used to using this but one thing I would say is "It hurts so good!"  Don't get me wrong, the Rumble Roller should not hurt(as in sharp pain) but it does put quite a bit of pressure on your muscles to help them relax.  This is like no other foam roller on the market today.  When I did my research on the product, their website says that the "blue" roller is good for someone that has used a foam roller and received good results from it.  That was me but frankly I thought perhaps their "black" roller might be better for me.  I'm sure glad that they sent their blue one because I cannot imagine a more firm roller.  The black is good for people that has not had good success from a foam roller and needs something even firmer.

If you have used a foam roller in the past, I would highly recommend the RumbleRoller.  This will be one of the unique products related to running that will get daily use from me going forward.  After you get used to this, you will see the amazing feel that you get from using this on a regular basis.  I remember when I started using a regular foam roller and thought it was too hard on the muscle(it hurt) but over time, you could not get enough pressure on your muscle.  With the RumbleRoller you will have no worries in regards to this.  The pressure is unbelievable and really helps work your sore muscles.  You will have to take it a little slow at first but you will love using this.

You can get the RumbleRoller in two sizes, a travel size that is 5 inches diameter by 12 inches long and also a full size that is 6 inches diameter and 31 inches long.  In addition, as discussed above, there is the original firmness and the extra firm.
Another picture from their website
Shows sizes and types
Here's one more chart from their website that shows the comparison of other items on the market.  I have tried most of these other products and none give you the pressure you need on the muscle like the RumbleRoller.

Would you like to learn more about the RumbleRoller?  Check them out:

Click HERE to go to their Website where you can find out where they are sold or order one online.  The cost is $45 for the travel roller and $70 for the full size.  While it's sounds costly, given the product does not break down, it's worth it.  If a $20 foam roller only lasts two months, you do the math.  Buy one, your legs will thank you.

Click HERE for their Facebook page.

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!

* Note:  I received a complementary RumbleRoller in exchange for a review of their product.  All opinions in this review are my own and I was not required to give a positive review.

A new blog(for me) and you too

6 miles on the schedule today......done and what nice weather to run in.  Mid 30's is perfect!  I'm excited today because my running buddy is going run the Flying Pig with me.  Happy to be doing it with him instead of alone!

--------------

Ok, so I don't always talk about all the great other blogs out there in blogland.  There are so, so many of them and it would be nice if I had time to sit down and read every single one of them that I follow but it's just not possible :(

I have met many people writing this blog....ok, well, not really met lots but have talked to many through posting, e-mail, etc.  Just like with runners -- you know, the runners that always say hi to you and the ones you could talk to forever about racing, gear, training, blah, blah, blah.  Ha!  Bloggers also tend to be very friendly people.  It's one of the few nice things that I think has come out of the internet.

I recently stumbled onto a new(to me) blog that I just started following.  The blog.....

Jenn's Adventures!  You can click HERE to see her blog or go to her button on the right hand side of my blog near then end.  Or click the picture here too.
She has a great post that I think that everyone will really like and is very useful.  It's about making a button for your blog You can see mine ---->>>
Ok, look up a little more.

I designed it(I guess it's like my logo, but I could use a better one) but she helped me walk through setting this up.  Yes, there are instructions and you can read about them HERE if you want to make your own button.  These are step by step and easy to do but I could not get it to work for me.  As you see, it's now working.  Go ahead...try it!  Grab the code and put it into an HTML widget and my button will show up on your blog.  I know the button is not a new concept but:

1) It's exciting learning new things for the blog.  I need to learn more.
2) It's nice to know that someone, thousands of miles away and has no idea who I am, takes her time, on a VERY busy day(when she's moving!!) to e-mail me help on this.  I mean, really, who does that?  It must be that Hawaiian atmosphere.  Haha!

Thanks Jen for the pointers on the blog.  If you don't follow her, now's the time!  She's also got a giveaway going on as well for a cool YMX Jersey.  Hurry because the contest ends 2/7.  She's also has a contest through Rafflecopter for an Apple Ipad 2/Kindle Fire ending on 2/9.

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!

Nuun review and Giveaway!!!

3 miles today....done!

-------------

Nuun contacted me recently to see if I would have an interest in testing and reviewing their product.  While I'm sure many of you runners/cyclists know, but for those of you that don't know, they make Electrolyte drink tablets to help you with Hydration during/after running/exercise.  Here's what I was sent:

A cool waterbottle with their logo on it and two flavors - Strawberry Lemonade and Tri-berry.  Each tube contains 12 tablets.  Here's what the tablets give you:

Each tablet makes 16 oz. of Nuun and gives you the following:  360 mg of Sodium, 100 mg of Potassium, 25 mg of Magnesium and 13 mg of Calcium.  It has less than 8 calories.  NO sugar.  No high-frutose corn syrup.  No artificial flavors or colors.

Both flavors that I tried had a good taste to them.  The taste is basically a flavored water with a very light taste.  What I mean is that it does not taste syrupy(is that a word?) or heavy so it's enjoyable to drink.  I'm sure many of you have been to races where you tasted the drink they were giving out and it was too heavy/sugary for you to drink and then keep running.  This is not the case with Nuun.  Nuun also has a good aftertaste as well.

As most of you know, I have not been a big fan of drinks like these.  Many do not have a good taste or are not good for you.  Actually there has only been two brands, including Nuun, that I have actually liked.

Nuun is really simple to use.  Drop a tablet in your waterbottle, wait two minutes and it's ready to drink.  Here's what the tablet looks like:

The price is also extremely reasonable at only 46 to 50 cents depending on how much you purchase.  Actually, I'm not sure you could find anything less expensive in the electrolyte drink area.  As you know, I'm also a big fan of companies that help the environment.  In this case, using these is helping save twelve 16 oz. plastic bottles from going into the landfill.

Flavors, flavors, flavors! - lots of flavors to pick from including Lemon+Lime, Tri-berry, Strawberry-Lemonade, Grape(which is co-branded with Team in Training and 15% goes back to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - awesome!), Orange, Fruit-Punch, Kona Cola, Citrus Fruit, Lemon Tea, Tropical, Banana, Goji Berry Green Tea, Tangerine Ginger, and Cucumber Mint.

You can purchase these in single flavors of four packs or you can get a mixed four pack of four flavors.  You can also order a 100 count box of single serve tablets as well.  A great way to get a good mix of flavors too.

Overall, I would highly recommend these and I believe you will find them to be a staple in your hydration plan going forward no matter what you are training for.

To learn more,

Click HERE to go to their website.

Click HERE to go to their Facebook page

Click HERE to go to their Twitter page

Would you like to try Nuun?  In addition to the samples they sent me, they also included a four pack sample for me to give away to one of my lucky readers.  The four pack has Fruit Punch, Grape, Strawberry Lemonade and Tropical in it.  It will give you enough to make 48 - 16oz. drinks.

Here's the rules to win:

1) Be a follower of Detroit Runner and let me know you are(1 entry)
2) Go to Nuun's Facebook page, "like them" and let them know that Detroit Runner sent you.  Even if you are already a fan, let them know Detroit Runner sent you and let me know here(1 entry)
3) Go to Nuun's Twitter page and follow them.  Even if you are already following, let them know that Detroit Runner sent you and let me know here(1 entry)
4) Answer the question:  "What do you use to hydrate during/after your run?"

Four ways to win!  Good luck!  Contest to end February 8th.

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!
