So my question of the day is why are there not other race distances as a general rule.  There's the typical 1 mile, 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon.  Even the 50k, 50 mile, 100k and 100 miler seems standard in Ultra running.  And then many of us have seen the 5 miler, 15k, the 10 miler, or the 25k but on a lesser quantity.
Remember Wacky Races growing up?
Why isn't there more 17.4 mile runs?  Ok, I just picked that number out of my head but, you know what I'm saying?  I think some of these races could capitalize on the fact that runners are looking for PR's.  It's an instant PR with a new race distance.  I've got one in mind for a race I'm considering planning but I'll keep that one a surprise.

How about you?  What's the strangest distance you have run in a race?

Have a great day and.....Keep Running!!!!

  1. Last Memorial Day we ran across the Mackinac Bridge then through a little bit of the town. They listed it as a 5.6 mile run, but I had 5.06 on my Garmin. They made it look like I ran a much faster pace than I really did! I thought that was a good one, where it was more about the experience and where we ran. No need to add an extra mile through the town just to say it's a 10K - it was cool enough just running across the bridge.

    1. That's on my list of to do races. I just don't want to get up that early to go there(it's an hour from my cottage)

  2. We have all you mentioned and many 20 mile races here in South Africa. 5km is not really official here and mainly run as fun runs for kids and family. On trails we run many strange (non standard) distances. I've done 13.4, 11.7, 36.6, 78.5, 92, 153, and many other kilometer distances...all on trail. On the road the weirdest was an 11km race.

    1. Johann - I'd be happy to run any race in South Africa. The experience alone!

  3. I actually love the weird race distances. 15k has been my fav so far. Love the auto PR in most cases - you usually go in wo expectation and do so much better

    2. 158!!! Holy cow! Probably more common overseas - not many around these parts.

  4. The reason I like funny distances is: I don't have to race the clock to keep my ave time for that distance up... At the moment I'm scared to run a half as I have to run fast to keep the ave good... I wish they made more 25km, 15mile ect...

  5. On September 8, Mackinac Island is hosting 8 miles around the island. A good training run for the Brooksie, plus what a beautiful setting!!
